Institute for Secondary Teacher Education

The team of the Institute for Secondary Teacher Education conceives, organizes and evaluates the Initial Teacher Education and Continuing Professional Development for teachers of Secondary schools. In the field of Initial Teacher Education it cooperates with its partners in the Teacher Education Network South-East in all general education subjects taught at Secondary schools. It accompanies and counsels Secondary schools as well as thematically relevant education networks and education regions in the development of subject-related teaching.
The team of the Institute conducts research in the general didactics and subject sciences of Secondary School Education with the aim of contributing to subject-related teaching development. It cooperates regionally, nationally and internationally. It disseminates its research findings and products in the teaching and counselling of the professional community as well as in scientific publications and at conferences in the scientific community. The Centre for Didactic Research in Natural Science Education, the Centre for Research and Didactics of Children’s and Youth Literature and the Centre for Nutrition and Health Education as well as the Regional Didactics Centres for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History and Geography are assigned to the Institute.
Core tasks of the Institute are the conception, coordination, implementation and evaluation of
- Initial Teacher Education in the Bachelor and Master programmes for Secondary Teacher Education in joint studies in the Teacher Education Network South-East
- subject-specific Continuing Development teaching for teachers of general subjects in Secondary schools
- Continuing Professional Development in subject-specific university courses of studies
- research and development projects in the subject-specific didactics and subject sciences of general subject teaching in secondary education
- the Centre for Research and Didactics of Children’s and Youth Literature, the Centre for Didactic Research in Natural Science Education and the Centre for Nutrition and Health Education
- the Regional Didactics Centres for Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History and Geography
- the dissemination of research findings and products

An der PH Steiermark arbeiten mehrere Fachdidaktikerinnen und Fachdidaktiker, die die Kooperationen mit den Partnerinstitutionen, dem Landesschulrat und den Schulen besonders pflegen und als Ansprechpartnerinnen und Ansprechpartner fungieren.
Zu den Aufgaben der Koordinatorinnen und Koordinatoren zählen:
- die Abhaltung fachdidaktischer Lehrveranstaltungen,
- die Mitarbeit an der Weiterentwicklung und Evaluation des jeweiligen Lehramtscurriculums,
- die Mitwirkung an den (Regionalen) Fachdidaktikzentren,
- die Betreuung der Ausbildung von Mentorinnen und Mentoren,
- die starke Einbeziehung von Schulen und des schulischen Umfeldes,
- die eigene Forschungstätigkeit oder die Mitarbeit an Forschungsprojekten.
